Shoulder Dislocation

The upper arm bone slips out of the shoulder socket, causing severe pain, deformity, and instability — often recurring if the underlying ligament or labral damage is not surgically repaired.

ABOUT THIS CONDITION

What is Shoulder Dislocation

Shoulder dislocation occurs when the upper arm bone (humerus) slips out of its normal position in the shoulder socket (glenoid). The shoulder joint has the widest range of motion of any joint in the body, which also makes it the most commonly dislocated joint. When the shoulder dislocates, the surrounding ligaments, joint capsule, and labrum — the ring of cartilage that deepens the socket — may also be stretched or torn. This condition commonly occurs due to sports injuries, falls, or direct trauma. In younger athletes, the shoulder may repeatedly dislocate because of structural damage to the labrum (Bankart lesion) or significant bone loss. Recurrent shoulder instability can lead to ongoing pain, weakness, and difficulty with overhead activities. Dr. Satish Reddy Gandavarapu performs advanced arthroscopic and open stabilisation procedures for shoulder dislocation surgery in Hyderabad at Lux Hospitals.

KeyFacts

Bankart Lesion

Labral tear at the front of the socket — most common cause of recurrent dislocation

Bone Loss

Significant glenoid bone loss may require Latarjet procedure rather than soft tissue repair

Arthroscopic Bankart

Gold standard for recurrent instability without significant bone loss

Latarjet

Bone block procedure for bone loss cases or failed previous stabilisation

Capsular Plication

Tightening of the loose shoulder capsule for multidirectional instability

HOW WE TREAT IT

Treatment Approach

Arthroscopic Bankart Repair — Restore Shoulder Stability

Dr. Satish Reddy Gandavarapu performs arthroscopic Bankart repair as the gold standard treatment for recurrent shoulder dislocation caused by labral tears. Using minimally invasive keyhole techniques, the torn labrum is reattached to the shoulder socket, restoring stability and allowing return to sports. For cases with significant bone loss, the Latarjet procedure provides durable long-term stability. Available at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad.

  1. 1

    Step 1: Assessment & Imaging

MRI and CT scan evaluate the labral tear, bone loss, and capsule condition to determine whether arthroscopic Bankart repair, Latarjet procedure, or capsular plication is most appropriate.

  2. 2

    Step 2: Acute Dislocation Management

An acute dislocation is first reduced (relocated) under sedation or anaesthesia. Imaging then confirms the extent of structural damage to plan definitive treatment.

  3. 3

    Step 3: Surgical Stabilisation

Arthroscopic Bankart repair, Latarjet procedure, or capsular shift is performed to restore structural stability and prevent further dislocations.

  4. 4

    Step 4: Rehabilitation

The shoulder is supported in a sling post-operatively. Physiotherapy progressively restores strength and range of motion. Return to sport takes several months.
